14 Pages of Great Wisdom and Other Interesting Things
October 8, 2015
I have read many books this year and over my lifetime. I’ve read most of Howard Marks’ memos and all his books. In his recent memo (only 14 pages long), he provides greater wisdom than many investment books I have read combined! To read the memo, you can do so through: http://www.oaktreecapital.com/memo.aspx
In case you read this 3 months after the date of this blog post, you can find the memo by going to 2015 and looking for the one titled, “It’s Not Easy”.
I highly encourage you to read it. It only took me less than 30 minutes to do so. You will be wiser for it.
On other news, I’ve recently been elected a board member of a non-profit organization called Advancing Students Forward. It’s an organization that helps students in Mexico financially, academically, emotionally and socially. They help kids from the 7th grade all the way to college where tuition is not completely free. Having 2 young daughters endears me to their mission and I believe that one of the best ways to make the world a better place is to help our younger generation to become better students and people. If you want to check out their website, you can do so through: http://advancingstudentsforward.org
I believe that investing can’t be fully learned from just reading. Immersion in real life business situations and on the ground market research is critical to one’s development. I have read hundreds, if not thousands, of proxy statements. Proxy statements are the documents that board members of the companies we invest in communicate compensation, policies, governance, pension, and other important things such as conflicts of interest. Having gone through 4 hours of board member training this week and another 4 next week along with real life experience of becoming a board member will help me obtain better insights when I read future proxy statements.
The secret to investing is become better everyday. Inch by inch. It will compound to a significant advantage if you do it for a long enough period of time.
If you know someone who wants to become a better investor, please share this blog post with them.
